Your Politician
|
Introduction
Understanding
the political world is important because of its impact
on our daily lives. It is important for your Dreamer
to understand the role of politics in our society, different
government jobs, how democracy works, and how to respectfully
voice their opinion. In this activity, you will write
to a politician regarding an issue important to your
Dreamer.
Purpose
•
Reinforcement of curriculum in Social Studies, Government,
or History classes
• Discuss a variety of jobs and careers
• Demonstrate how to use good manners in writing
• Demonstrate respect of others and act with dignity
Time
This
activity will take 1-2 hours to learn about politics
and democracy, discuss a current issue, and write to
a politician.
Materials
•
The internet, books, newspapers, and/or news magazines
• Paper and pen/pencil
• Envelope and postage stamp
Directions
•
Begin by explaining democracy, the role of democracy
and government in our society, the role of politicians
and government officials, etc.
• Explain different jobs in the government: senators,
congressmen, president, FBI, different government agencies,
etc.
• Read through newspapers and news magazines to
find current issues in your Dreamers community (neighborhood,
school, city, state, etc). Find an issue that is important
to your Dreamer.
• Write a politician regarding the issue your
Dreamer feels is important. If your Dreamer does not
feel passionate enough about an issue, have them write
a politician they like thanking them for the job they
do.
• Note: Depending on who the politician is, your
Dreamer may receive a response!
